What documents should I be getting from contractors?

When working with contractors, the level of documentation we require from them is often closely linked to the risk and level of complexity associated with the work they complete for you, and the size of their organisation.

For example, large businesses completing high-risk work would certainly need to supply a Safe Work Method Statement or Risk Assessment and Operating Procedure for the work that they do, liability insurance, and workers' compensation insurance for their staff.

Checking to see that electrical contractors are licensed and insured can be the difference between an insurance claim being approved or denied (ie, if unlicensed, then the claim can be rejected if their work contributed to the incident).

Solo operators or low-risk work (eg, an accountant coming to work onsite) would not be required to submit risk/procedural documentation, but rather and more simply any license or qualification they may require to complete the work for you.
